Born in London on July 26, 1945, Helen Mirren is a descendant of Russian aristocracy. A veteran of Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company, she first appeared onscreen in 1967's Herostratus, followed by A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968).Mirren went to play notable roles in Excalibur; The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover; and the Emmy-winning lead in The Passion of Ayn Rand (1999). In 1991, she took on the first of seven incarnations as Jane Tennison in the BBC police procedural "Prime Suspect," for which the actress won two Emmys.
Mirren has also netted Oscar nods for The Madness of King George (1994) and Gosford Park (2001). She scored an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in a 2005 miniseries and won the Oscar portraying Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006). Three years later, Mirren earned Golden Globe and Oscar nominations as Best Actress for The Last Station.
