An acclaimed character actor who performed the role of Mark Twain more than 2,000 times as part his long-running, Tony Award-winning one-man show, Harold "Hal" Holbrook was born in Cleveland on Feb. 17, 1925, and raised by his grandparents in South Weymouth, Mass.Holbrook flourished on Broadway throughout his career, but television proved to be his best medium when it came to professional accolades, earning the actor seven Emmy nominations and five wins. Later in his career, he also delivered memorable guest spots on "The West Wing" (2002) and "The Sopranos" (2006).
On the big screen, Holbrook is best remembered for his work in All the President's Men (1976), Wall Street (1987), The Firm (1993) and Into the Wild (2007), which earned him an Academy Award nomination at the age of 82. At the time of his Oscar nod, Holbrook was the oldest actor to ever receive the honor.
