Born Nov. 30, 1978, in Guadalajara, Bernal began his career as a child actor, and by age 12, he had been cast in a Mexican soap opera. Just four years later, he appeared in his first film, and soon thereafter, he left home to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
Bernal's performance in 2001's Y Tu Mama Tambien cemented his reputation as a rising star, and more choice roles followed in films such as The Motorcycle Diaries, Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education and 2006's Babel (opposite Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett).
