Elizabeth Taylor was born in London Feb. 27, 1932, to American parents who fled the oncoming war in 1939 by returning to the United States. In 1942, the budding beauty caught the eye of talent scouts in Los Angeles and was cast in There's One Born Every Minute. The following year, she was signed to a long-term contract by MGM.Taylor's popularity skyrocketed in Lassie Come Home, Jane Eyre, National Velvet and Life with Father. By the early '50s, she had jumped into grown-up romantic roles in Father of the Bride, A Place in the Sun, Ivanhoe and Elephant Walk. She won the Best Actress Oscar for Butterfield 8 (1960) and again for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (with her Cleopatra co-star and two-time husband, Richard Burton).
Health issues restricted Taylor's appearances in later years to occasional feature and TV films, such as 1994's The Flintstones and 2001's These Old Broads.
