Often called "the thinking women's sex symbol," rough-hewn leading man Ed Harris is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. Born November 28, 1950, in Englewood, N.J., Harris attended Columbia University, where he was first bitten by the acting bug. After graduating from the theatre program at the University of Oklahoma, Harris headed to Hollywood, where, in 1983, he first attained critical acclaim as astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff. Since then, he's appeared year in and year out in major movies and stage plays.
Although nominated four times for an Academy Award (The Hours, Pollock, The Truman Show and Apollo 13), Harris has yet to win the coveted Oscar. In addition to playing the title role in Pollock (2000), the movie also marked Harris's debut as a director.
