Born Oct. 26, 1961, in Waterbury, Conn., Dylan McDermott had a difficult early life. With his parents split and his mother dead by the time he was 5, McDermott was on his way to becoming a delinquent when he discovered acting as a teen. With encouragement from his stepmother, playwright Eve Ensler, McDermott studied acting at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse and soon began landing roles on the New York stage. In 1985, McDermott appeared on Broadway in Neil Simon's "Biloxi Blues," and two years later, he made his film debut in Hamburger Hill. Film roles continued to come his way -- including that of Julia Roberts's estranged husband in Steel Magnolias (1989) and in Clint Eastwood's In the Line of Fire (1993) -- but true stardom eluded him until he was cast in TV's legal drama "The Practice."
More recently, McDermott has appeared in the film Wonderland (2003) and the TV miniseries The Grid.
