With her infectiously sunny nature and plucky spirit, Doris Day charmed audiences with a slew of films that portrayed her just shy of sainthood. Despite her cheerful countenance, however, Day's life has been far from easy.Born April 3, 1924, in Cincinnati, Day dreamed of becoming a dancer, but when a near-fatal car accident dashed those hopes, the 14-year-old Day turned her attention to singing. By age 16, Day was touring with Les Brown and his band, and in 1948 she appeared in her first feature film, Romance on the High Seas. She made a string of successful movies during the '50s, including Teacher's Pet, The Pajama Game, Pillow Talk (which earned her an Oscar nomination), The Man Who Knew Too Much and her favorite, Calamity Jane.
In 1968, Day began a successful TV career with "The Doris Day Show," which ran five seasons. She has devoted herself to animal rights since 1980.
