Lawson began his London stage career in 1969's "The Metamorphosis." He has appeared in numerous television series and movies, including Lucky Jim, The Fabulous Bagel Boys and a two-year stint on the BBC's medical drama "Holby City." In 1983, he starred opposite Burt Lancaster in the critically acclaimed film Local Hero.
Lawson directed the 1999 stage production of "Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs," which starred Lawson's nephew, Ewan McGregor. In 2005, Lawson received an Emmy nod for his performance as John Jarndyce in the critically acclaimed BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' Bleak House.
