Expert at playing shy and diffident roles, Englishman Colin Firth -- born in 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, England -- actually lived in Nigeria with his parents until he was 4 years old; he also lived in St. Louis, Mo., for a brief period during his teens.Firth's career in show business started inauspiciously enough with a job in the wardrobe department in Britain's National Theatre. He studied acting with the Drama Centre in London, where he performed his first amateur "Hamlet."
After roles in several plays, Firth made his film debut in 1984 in Another Country, opposite another Englishman, Rupert Everett. Key films include A Month in the Country, Valmont, The English Patient, Bridget Jones's Diary (opposite Renee Zellweger), Conspiracy and Love Actually. Firth and his wife, Livia, were married in 1997 and have two children.
