The son of a steelworker, Clint Eastwood was born May 31, 1930, in San Francisco and worked as a logger and gas station attendant before moving to Hollywood. After achieving minor fame in the TV series "Rawhide," Eastwood became a star in the wake of Sergio Leone's successful mid-1960s spaghetti Westerns -- A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. With a face and presence that was born to play tough, rugged roles, Eastwood continued to turn heads in Dirty Harry and In the Line of Fire, as well as his neutrally received romantic drama The Bridges of Madison County.
He also worked behind the camera for decades and achieved directorial success in 1992 with his Oscar-winning Western Unforgiven. His recognition by the Academy continued with Best Director and Best Picture nods for Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby (which won both categories) and Letters from Iwo Jima.
