Born on October 8, 1943, in Woodstock, N.Y., to a prominent publishing figure and his heiress wife, Chevy Chase was the classic class clown. Eventually, his high jinks got him expelled from Haverford College (when he brought a cow into a classroom), but he transferred to and graduated from Bard College.Chase began his comedy career as a writer for National Lampoon. Hired as a scribe for "Saturday Night Live" in 1975, Chase persuaded producer Lorne Michaels to let him perform on camera, where he scored an instant hit as the pratfalling "Weekend Update" anchor. After winning Emmys for writing and acting on the show, he left after one season to become SNL's first movie star (In Foul Play, 1978).
After leading turns in Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation and Fletch, Chase returned to TV with a short-lived talk show. He now makes cameo appearances and family-oriented films.
