Born Cherilyn LaPiere-Sarkesian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, Calif., Cher established herself in the late 1960s as part of a singing duo with then-husband Sonny Bono. Her television variety show with Bono and much of her early film work -- including her first film, Chastity (1969) -- were done to promote her music.By the early 1980s, Cher began to establish herself as a serious actress with roles in Robert Altman's Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982) and Silkwood (1983), for which she earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Through the 1980s, Cher continued her acting success with a string of memorable roles in Mask, The Witches of Eastwick and her Best Actress Oscar-winning turn in Moonstruck (1987).
Focusing more on her music since the 1990s, Cher still finds time for the occasional supporting role in films such as Tea with Mussolini (1999).
