Born in Eltham, England, May 29, 1903, Bob Hope was raised in Cleveland after age 4. He started in vaudeville as a teenager, eventually landing in New York, where he won a role in the 1933 Broadway musical "Roberta." From there, Hope went into radio and comedy shorts, then to Hollywood for his big-screen debut in The Big Broadcast of 1938.After scoring hits with The Cat and the Canary and The Ghost Breakers, Hope was cast opposite Bing Crosby in Road to Singapore (1940), the first of seven popular Road pictures. During World War II, Hope led USO shows to entertain troops overseas, a tradition he continued through the 1991 Gulf War.
Later films included The Paleface, Beau James and The Muppet Movie. Hope's last film role was a cameo in 1985's Spies Like Us. Movie, TV and stage star, humanitarian, friend of presidents and symbol of America, the much-honored Hope died at age 100 in 2003.
