In 2004, Bill Murray became the first "Saturday Night Live" original cast member to be nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award, for his hilariously low-key performance as an American star stranded in Japan in Lost in Translation. This master of deadpan dry wit was born the fifth of nine children in Wilmette, Ill., on September 21, 1950. Murray began his comedy career with The National Lampoon Radio Hour and Chicago's "Second City" comedy troupe with his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray. In 1975, he made his screen debut as a voice in the dubbed version of the adult French cartoon Shame of the Jungle, followed by a bit part in Next Stop, Greenwich Village (1976).
Murray then built up a sizable following with such comedies as Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Scrooged and Groundhog Day, but he's also explored more serious characters in The Razor's Edge, Rushmore and Mad Dog and Glory.
