Born on December 30, 1966, in New York City, director Bennett Miller spent two years studying film at New York University before dropping out and working at various odd jobs.In 1998, he made his directorial debut with the documentary The Cruise, telling the story of eccentric, quasi-homeless New York tour guide Timothy "Speed" Levitch. A favorite on the festival circuit, the film won a Best Documentary Emmy Award.
Miller then turned to directing commercials while he searched for a script for his next project. Eventually, his childhood friend Dan Futterman presented him with the screenplay for Capote, a rich account of unconventional author Truman Capote's research for his groundbreaking classic In Cold Blood. The two chose Philip Seymour Hoffman, an actor they befriended at a summer theater camp as teenagers, to star in the 2005 film, which received critical acclaim and numerous awards.
