Beatrice Arthur
A husky-voiced actress with whip-smart comedic timing and a flair for one-liners, Bea Arthur was born Bernice Frankel in New York City on May 13, 1922. She began using the nickname "B," which later became Beatrice, and acquired the surname Arthur through her brief marriage to playwright Robert Alan Aurthur.

Arthur was already a respected stage actress with a Tony Award under her belt for "Mame" when she landed a spot playing Edith Bunker's cousin, Maude Findlay, on the primetime sitcom "All in the Family." The character proved popular enough to warrant "Maude" her own Emmy-winning spinoff -- and, at age 50, Arthur was a television "It" girl.

In her 60s, Arthur struck TV gold again with the groundbreaking senior citizen sitcom "The Golden Girls," earning another Emmy for her deadpan portrayal of divorcee Dorothy Zbornak. She died at age 86 on April 25, 2009.
