Barry Levinson
An Oscar-winning director who started out as a writer and improv comic, Barry Levinson was born in Baltimore on April 6, 1942. He attended American University in Washington, D.C., but ultimately moved to Los Angeles to immerse himself in the entertainment business.

Even before Levinson made his directorial debut with the semiautobiographical Diner (1982), he had racked up a pair of shared Emmy Awards for his work as a comedy writer on "The Carol Burnett Show." He had also amassed credits as an actor, appearing in Silent Movie (1976) and High Anxiety (1977), a pair of Mel Brooks comedies that he also co-wrote.

Directorially speaking, Levinson's impressive credits include The Natural (1984), Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Rain Man (1988), Bugsy (1991), Wag the Dog (1997) and Envy (2004). He also wrote and directed Avalon (1990) and Man of the Year (2006).
