Born February 5, 1948, in Hollywood, Calif., Barbara Hershey was discovered in a student production at Hollywood High School and began her acting career with TV roles (in "Gidget" and "The Monroes") before making her film debut in With Six You Get Eggroll (1968).She made an impression as a vicious teen in 1969's Last Summer and finally landed a lead role in Martin Scorsese's first feature, Boxcar Bertha (1972). Often typecast as a flower girl early in her career, Hershey eventually grew into more mature and varied roles, giving notable performances in 1980s films such as The Right Stuff, The Natural, Hannah and Her Sisters, Hoosiers, Beaches and The Last Temptation of Christ.
Two late-1980s films, A World Apart and Shy People, won her Best Actress awards at the Cannes Film Festival. She also earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for 1996's The Portrait of a Lady.
