Born August 9, 1978, in the small town of Beaumont, France, Audrey Tautou attended drama lessons at the Cours Florent European acting school. Shortly after graduation, she landed roles in films for French television.Around this time, Tautou was offered a role in director Tonie Marshall's film Venus Beauty Institute (1999), for which she won a Best New Actress Cesar award. She shot to international fame with her role in the charming comedy Amelie (2001), which was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
The atmospheric He Loves Me ... He Loves Me Not (2002) cast Tautou as a sympathetic woman in love and a possible stalker. Tautou made her English-language debut in Dirty Pretty Things (2002), directed by Stephen Frears.
