Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on Nov. 4, 1918, Art Carney shot to stardom as Ralph Kramden's working-class sidekick, Ed Norton, on the hit TV series "The Honeymooners" (1955-56).Carney first introduced the Norton character in comic sketches on "Cavalcade of Stars" (1951-52) and later perfected it as a supporting player on Jackie Gleason's numerous variety shows throughout the 1960s. The part was so popular, in fact, that Carney became the first actor to earn three consecutive Emmy Awards in 1953, 1954 and 1955.
After turning in an Oscar-winning performance as an aging road-tripper in Harry and Tonto (1974) and nabbing another Emmy for a supporting role opposite James Cagney in the TV movie Terrible Joe Moran (1984), Carney enjoyed a run on "The Cavanaughs" (1986-89) before his final film appearance in Last Action Hero (1993). He died on Nov. 9, 2003, at the age of 85.
