Born Dec. 31, 1937, in West Glamorgan, Wales, the rather shy Anthony Hopkins struggled in the academic realm but soon excelled onstage. After a stint at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he got his break in 1965 when he worked under Sir Laurence Olivier at the National Theatre in London.Hopkins went on to play an astounding number of successful roles in British and American films but received the greatest acclaim for his Oscar-winning performance as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
The actor's other notable movies include the 1993 dramas Shadowlands and The Remains of the Day, Nixon (1995) and Amistad (1997). He was knighted in 1993, and although Hopkins became a United States citizen in April 2000, he retains his British citizenship and his title.
