Sigourney Weaver
Sigourney WeaverBorn Oct. 8, 1949, in New York City, Sigourney Weaver cut her acting chops in summer stock theatre. But her statuesque height often kept her from being cast in leading roles.

During the 1970s, she performed in theatre, appeared in commercials and landed prime parts in soap operas. But her breakthrough role came with Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), in which she played the resilient Ripley. Weaver repeated the role in three sequels and was later nominated for her first Best Actress Oscar for Aliens (1986).

Throughout her career, she's found success in both comedies and dramas, such as The Year of Living Dangerously (1982), 1984's Ghostbusters (and its 1989 sequel), The Ice Storm (1997), Galaxy Quest (1999) and The Village (2004). In 1988, Weaver was nominated for two Oscars -- a Best Supporting Actress nod for Working Girl and one for Best Actress in Gorillas in the Mist. Her work in TV (Snow White: A Tale of Terror and Prayers for Bobby) have also been recognized with Emmy nods.
