Born April 25, 1940, in New York City, high school dropout Al Pacino established a theatrical career in the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg. A 1969 Tony Award for "Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?" led to a small role in the rarely seen film Me, Natalie that same year.It was his intense work as a junkie in Panic in Needle Park (1971) that convinced Francis Coppola to hire the then-unknown Pacino to play Mafia heir Michael Corleone in The Godfather. He became an overnight sensation, reprising the role in The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III.
Thus began a string of critical and popular hits for Pacino: Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, ...And Justice for All, Scarface, Dick Tracy and others. He racked up a total of eight Oscar nominations before finally snagging the prize for Scent of a Woman (1992). His more recent appearances include Donnie Brasco, Simone and Gigli.
