Born Malcolm John Taylor on June 13, 1943, in Leeds, England, Malcolm McDowell has portrayed a string of nasty characters on film, creating an indelibly etched image as a screen villain.McDowell worked as a Royal Shakespeare Company extra before securing the part of an amoral hooligan in A Clockwork Orange (1971). McDowell chalked up a Golden Globe nomination for his chilling portrayal and was catapulted to fame, but the role ultimately typecast him. In 1979, he made an auspicious American movie debut in Time After Time and later that year starred as the iniquitous title character in Caligula.
The 1980s were a mixed bag for McDowell as he appeared in feature films such as Cross Creek ('83) and made-for-TV movies. He again played the heavy in 1994's Star Trek: Generations; his other big-screen highlights include Hugo Pool (1997), My Life So Far (1999) and The Company (2003).
