Tom Courtenay
A revered British actor of stage and screen who hit his stride in the 1960s with a string of noteworthy movie roles, Tom Courtenay was born Feb. 25, 1937, in Hull, England.

Courtenay made a memorable film debut in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), followed by an arresting performance in Billy Liar, reprising a part he had played as understudy to Albert Finney in London's West End. On the heels of those successes, Courtenay received an Oscar nod with his finely etched turn as a young revolutionary in the 1965 epic Doctor Zhivago.

In 1982, Courtenay earned a Tony nomination for "The Dresser" in a role he had originated on the London stage, resurrecting the character -- and nabbing another Oscar nod -- for the 1983 film version. He picked up his first Emmy nomination in 2009 for his work on the BBC adaptation of the Charles Dickens serial novel Little Dorrit.
