Born in Ontario on Jan. 12, 1960, to a U.S. diplomat and his wife, Oliver Platt grew up all over the world but planted roots in New York City. His high jinks as part of the Manhattan Punch Line Theatre Group caught the eye of actor Bill Murray, who encouraged Jonathan Demme to cast him in Married to the Mob (1988).That role led to a small part in Working Girl (1988) and regular spots in Hollywood films such as Flatliners (1990), Indecent Proposal (1993), A Time to Kill (1996), Bulworth (1998) and Doctor Dolittle (1998). The new millennium brought the chance to star in the television series "Deadline" and a recurring role on "The West Wing."
Other notable achievements for Platt include standout turns in Hope Springs (2003), Kinsey (2004) and The Ice Harvest (2005); a Tony nod for his Broadway debut in "Shining City"; and an Emmy nomination for the Showtime series "Huff."
