A parish priest can't offer spiritual guidance when a suicidal fisherman comes to him for help. He can't find passion -- only ridicule -- for his mistress who longs to marry him. His apathy reaches its apex when he delivers an oration in front of an empty church abandoned by his parishioners. Part of Ingmar Bergman's trilogy of faith, which also includes Through a Glass Darkly and The Silence (available on separate discs).
