Whispering Smith

Railroad officer Luke Smith (Alan Ladd) finds his convictions tested when an old friend, Murray Sinclair (Robert Preston), veers off the tracks after losing his job and starts disrupting the trains out of rage. Smith understands Sinclair's anger, but must also perform his duties as a man of the law. Complicating matters is Smith's growing affection for Murray's estranged wife (Brenda Marshall), which he knows shouldn't cloud his judgment.
