Novalee Nation (Natalie Portman) is a 15-year-old Tennessee transient who has to grow up in a hurry. Left pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend on a roadside in Sequoyah, Okla., Novalee takes refuge in a Wal-Mart. In short order, some eccentric, kindly strangers (Stockard Channing, Ashley Judd) "adopt" Novalee and her infant daughter, and together they try to buck the odds and build a life.
