Employing flashbacks as a narrative device, Yojiro Takita's period drama recounts the life of samurai Kanichiro Yoshimura (Kiichi Nakai) and the waning days of feudal Japan. His memory triggered by a photograph of the expert swordsman, the elderly Saito (Koichi Sato) reminisces about his past association with Yoshimura, a controversial character whose loyalty to both the shogunate and the emperor causes outer conflict and inner turmoil.
