Screen legend Lillian Gish stars as Anna Moore, a naïve New Englander duped into a sham marriage by a silver-tongued roué (Lowell Sherman) who deserts her after she turns up pregnant. When the infant dies, Anna leaves Boston, changes her name and finds shelter in the bucolic transcendence of a farm community. There she captures the heart of callow romantic David Bartlett (Richard Barthelmess), but Anna's checkered past comes back to haunt her.
