Peter Sellers plays a pompous retired general who still has a taste for the ladies in this lusty comedy of manners from French playwright Jean Anouilh, who tempers his treatment of the old rake's delusions with generous dollops of wit and compassion. Although this film's frank subject matter initially shocked British audiences and critics, it eventually ushered in a new openness in the depiction of sexuality.
