Manoel de Oliveira directs this portrait of a filmmaker of the same name who's played by Italian acting great Marcello Mastroianni (in his last film appearance). Manoel takes a break from his latest production to help one of the actors (Jean Yves Gautier) find his roots. As the director and three of his actors traverse the Portuguese countryside, Manoel becomes nostalgic about his past, embarking on his own voyage of self-discovery.
