This documentary traces the origins of vaudeville from the English music halls, Yiddish theatres and minstrel shows where the art form began. The story is told using film clips of vocalists, acrobats, ethnic comedians, dancers, ukulele players, contortionists, performing animals and other acts from the period. Woven throughout the compilation are contemporary interviews with vaudeville performers, including Studs Terkel, June Havoc and others.
