In this film noir adaptation of John Gregory Dunne's explosive best-seller loosely based on the unsolved "Black Dahlia" murder mystery, detective Tom Spellacy (Robert Duvall) investigates the killing of a prostitute in 1948 Los Angeles. He follows the trail to a dodgy businessman (Charles Durning) with unsavory connections to the Catholic Church and, in particular, young Monsignor Des (Robert De Niro), who happens to be Tom's estranged brother.
