After her husband dies, aristocrat Audrey Forbes-Hamilton (Penelope Keith) finds that she's nearly penniless and is forced to sell her beloved Grantleigh Manor to a man who aspires to stature, Richard De Vere (Peter Bowles). But Audrey won't let go of her old way of life, despite the presence of her new landlord.
