An unusual love story told in three episodes charts the course of Nan (Rachael Stirling), an ingénue who discovers a sexually charged world of male impersonators, actors and affluent women looking for female companionship in the usually controlled and corseted 1890s. She eventually takes up with a comely cross-dresser (Keeley Hawes) but soon learns she can only depend on herself. John Bowe, Jodhi May, Anna Chancellor and Hugh Bonneville co-star.
