Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved children's novel is revisited by Polish director Agnieszka Holland in this evocative and melancholy treatment. Mary (Kate Maberly), a strong-willed English girl orphaned during an earthquake in India, is returned to England to live with an unfeeling uncle in his oppressive mansion. Mary's mood lightens when she finds the key to a neglected garden and brings not only the roses but the entire house to life again.
