In Spain, during the Napoleonic Wars, a routed officer takes refuge in a battered inn where he comes across the titular tome. Directed in 1965 by Polish filmmaker Wojciech Has, The Saragossa Manuscript wends from its pages one engrossing tale after another, with offbeat themes that explore paternal tyranny and feature bearded hermits, Muslim sisters, demonically possessed lunatics, philosophers, gypsies and the Spanish Inquisition.
