In this cerebral melodrama based on W. Somerset Maugham's novel, disenchanted World War I veteran Larry Darrell (Tyrone Power) jilts his shallow fiancée, Isabel (Gene Tierney), to travel the globe seeking spiritual identity. Years later, they meet in Paris, where the married Isabel lives with her high-hat uncle (Clifton Webb) -- and tries desperately to rekindle Larry's love for her. Co-star Anne Baxter netted an Oscar for her supporting role.
