In The Philanthropist, Mirren portrays a woman in a literary world where absurd politics and mismatched couples create a witty satire; in The Little Minister, part of the BBC's "Play of the Month" series, Mirren plays a mysterious gypsy who becomes romantically involved with the new cleric in her rural 1840s Scotland village, creating a local scandal.
