Director Eric Rohmer's period film based on Heinrich von Kleist's novella follows a widowed Italian noblewoman (Edith Clever) during the Franco-Prussian War. When soldiers attack her castle, she escapes an attempted rape thanks to a chivalrous Russian count (Bruno Ganz). But months later, she's unaccountably expecting a child, and her mortified family rejects her. The film won the 1976 Cannes Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize.
