Tama, an orphaned boy, befriends fellow outcast Mahana, but then leaves her behind on a tropical island with the promise that he'll soon return to her. While he's at sea, Johnny Lingo, a successful and charismatic trader, tutors Tama. But as he embarks on his new life, Tama begins to reflect on his childhood promise to Mahana, leading him to a pivotal decision.
