Ira Wells (Art Carney), a sixty-something gumshoe who lives in a run-down Los Angeles boardinghouse, meets Margo (Lily Tomlin), a loopy former hippie, and tries to help find her missing cat. But the case of the purloined feline soon leads Ira to a man who might be responsible for the death of the detective's partner. The comic chemistry between Carney and Tomlin is potent, as is director-screenwriter Robert Benton's breezy script.
