Young widower August King (Jason Patric) comes across a beautiful runaway slave, Annalees (Thandie Newton), in the woods of North Carolina in 1815. Rather than let the slave's cruel owner catch, punish and possibly kill Annalees, August decides to risk his own life to help her reach freedom in the North. This multidimensional drama is a beautifully rendered tale about two strangers coming together in a time of crisis.
