Back in London, Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) and Sgt. Barbara Havers (Sharon Small) investigate the murder of a doorkeeper at the House of Lords, who was discovered floating in the Thames River, brutally beaten, with his hands tied behind his back. At first, the detectives suspect that the victim's gambling debts are to blame, but a second murder prompts them to investigate a possible connection to stolen documents.
