Quiet and shy, 15-year-old Patrick McCardle (Zac Efron) has always had trouble fitting in, but he feels strangely at home with Mr. Jones, an old man with a taste for liquor, gambling and the blues. When Patrick discovers Mr. Jones is actually former jockey Houston Jones and that he's nursing an injured racehorse back to health, the teen helps train the animal for the State Cup Steeplechase Race and gains the self-confidence he never had.
