The lives of three elderly Jewish widows (Ellen Burstyn, Olympia Dukakis, Diane Ladd) are put under a microscope. Doris (Dukakis) is prim and prudish, unable to bring herself to laugh at an off-color joke. Lucille (Ladd) is loud and outrageous. Esther (Burstyn) tries to find a balance between the two extremes. But their friendship is thrown into disarray when Esther meets a widower (Danny Aiello) and the two begin a tentative romance.
