In this Victorian-era drama based on Catherine Cookson's novel, destitute Riah Millican (Janet McTeer), a widow with three children, finds work as a maid for the reclusive Percival Miller (Bob Peck). The master of the house is drawn to Riah and her kids and breaks all rules of pedigree by teaching them to read and write. But when Miller dies and leaves Riah in charge of the mansion, she faces the disapproval of high society.
