Ingmar Bergman wrote this semi-autobiographical story of his parents' relationship and enlisted Bille August to direct. Theology student Henrik Bergman (Samuel Froler) and upper-class Anna Akerblom (Pernilla August) marry despite their families' disapproval. But they struggle as Anna tries to cope without the luxuries to which she's accustomed. The film grabbed the Golden Palm and Best Actress (for August) awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
